about

The first known recording of Steely P. Dan (or Steely Dan) with Delta blues guitarist Tommy Johnson. Steely was born on 13/32/1912 (Marth 32nd, 1912), a date that no longer exists, making him unable to age. He was born in Tunica, Mississippi as an 18 year old, making him a legal adult upon birth. Tommy Johnson was passing by at the age of 17 and decided to teach Steely how to sing the blues.

With the immediate passing of his mother and father on his day of birth, he was able to grasp basic understanding of guitar chords and how to sing in the "Blues voice", something you can hear Steely complain about on the track. Steely was quickly able to get a performance down flat, on 1/3/1913, performing "House of the Rising Sun" and "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?".

With the money from the performance, Tommy bought a recording session at the nearby Delta Studio, located in Murfreesboro, Tennessee (the only one in 300 miles) Steely wrote in his notebook. By April, they had finally driven there with a makeshift car and recorded the Johnson-penned "Oily Penguin Blues" and (planned) "House of the Rising Sun", but couldn't figure out how to record a B-side. So it was an A-side and then an etching with a knife. Only about 5 copies sold. It was the first of five singles and an album for the duo.

The original vinyl was found laying in Steely's studio on the night of The Doobie Brothers' first MSG concert, and an audio engineer took it. It was released on a 43-disc Box Set called "The Complete Steely Dan" in 1969. Remastered by Daniel Dan and Bart Simpson.

lyrics

[Verse 1: Steely Dan]
Ooh, penguins
I hate them
They are so wrong
I hate da penguins
Yeah, they are so cringe

[Chorus 1: Steely Dan]
I hate da penguins because
They do things wrong
Yeah da penguins fucking SUCK
Let them all die

[Verse 2: Tommy Johnson]
Ooh, oil
I love it
I love it, oil
It tastes really great
Yeah, it is so good

[Chorus 2: Steely Dan]
I love da oil because
It spills in seas
Yeah da oil frickin' MMMM
Let it all spill into the seas

[Tommy Johnson: Bluesy acoustic solo]

[Chorus 3: Steely Dan & Tommy Johnson]
I hate da penguins because
It spills in seas
Yeah da penguins fucking SUCK
Let it all spill
I hate da penguins because
It spills in seas
Yeah da penguins fucking SUCK
Let it all spill

[Tommy Johnson: Outro]
